The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) is the armed forces of the Republic of Uganda. The UPDF is responsible for defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Uganda as well as ensuring the security of the country’s citizens. The UPDF was established in 1986, after the disbandment of the previous national armed forces. Since then, the UPDF has grown to become one of the most professional and capable militaries in Africa.
The UPDF salary structure is based on rank and years of service. The UPDF offers a competitive salary package and a generous benefits package to its personnel. In addition to a salary, personnel are also provided with housing and medical benefits, as well as other allowances and benefits.
In 2021, the UPDF introduced a new salary structure for its personnel. The new structure is effective from 1st May 2021 and is applicable to all personnel of the UPDF. The new salary structure is based on the Government of Uganda’s new salary structure for civil servants.
The new structure consists of six salary bands. The lowest salary band is Band A and the highest salary band is Band F. The salary bands are as follows:
Band A: This band is for personnel with a rank of Private or Corporal and a minimum of three years of service. The salary range for this band is UGX 800,000 to 1,000,000 per month.
Band B: This band is for personnel with a rank of Sergeant and a minimum of five years of service. The salary range for this band is UGX 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 per month.
Band C: This band is for personnel with a rank of Warrant Officer and a minimum of seven years of service. The salary range for this band is UGX 1,200,000 to 1,400,000 per month.
Band D: This band is for personnel with a rank of Captain and a minimum of nine years of service. The salary range for this band is UGX 1,400,000 to 1,600,000 per month.
Band E: This band is for personnel with a rank of Major and a minimum of eleven years of service. The salary range for this band is UGX 1,600,000 to 1,900,000 per month.
Band F: This band is for personnel with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel and a minimum of thirteen years of service. The salary range for this band is UGX 1,900,000 to 2,200,000 per month.
The UPDF salary structure for 2022/2023 is yet to be announced. However, it is expected that the new salary structure will remain largely similar to the one introduced in 2021. The UPDF is committed to providing its personnel with a competitive salary package and generous benefits package. This helps to ensure the morale and well-being of its personnel and allows them to better serve their country.
