Chalimbana University

Chalimbana University traces its roots back to the inception of the Jeanes School in 1939, initially established as a Jeanes Training Centre to provide training for community teachers. Situated in the Chongwe district, approximately 57 km east of Lusaka, this esteemed institution has evolved significantly over the years.

In the 1950s, the college affiliated with the University of Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia, becoming known as Chalimbana Teacher Training College. At this stage, the college offered comprehensive training programs for both primary and secondary school teachers. However, in 1970, it transitioned into an exclusively in-service college, catering specifically to the professional development needs of primary school teachers and administrators. Consequently, the institution was renamed as NISTCOL. Subsequently, in 1975, the college introduced the Advanced Primary Course (APC) and Advanced Industrial Arts (AIA) – one-year upgrading courses designed for primary school teachers possessing the required school certificate qualifications.

To address the growing demand for specialized education, Chalimbana University expanded its offerings. In 1989, it introduced the Diploma in Basic Education, focusing on Science, Mathematics, and English. Later, in 1995, the institution affiliated with the University of Zambia, renaming the program as the Secondary Teachers’ Diploma. Moreover, Chalimbana University launched the Diploma in Education Management through distance learning in 2005, which has since evolved into the renowned Education Leadership and Management course.

In recognition of its commitment to academic excellence, the Zambian government granted NISTCOL university status in 2011. Following this milestone, Chalimbana University officially came into existence in 2013 through the enactment of statutory instrument Number 111 of 2013. The inauguration of Chalimbana University that same year marked a significant turning point, as the institution commenced offering degree programs alongside the already established Diploma courses. The university currently comprises nine schools, each offering a balanced academic curriculum and qualifications highly sought after by employers.

Chalimbana University boasts a robust academic portfolio, encompassing a wide range of outstanding programs, each striving for excellence in its respective field. Leveraging its distributed strengths, the university fosters innovation and creativity, aligning its efforts with the objectives outlined in the 7th National Development Plan.
